The Kartik Purnima Snan on the banks of Gandak River in Sonepur, near Patna, Bihar is Asia's largest cattle fair. The fortnight-long festivities kick off on the first full moon of Kartik Purnima following Diwali. The day celebrates Lord Siva destruction of the demon Tripura and is marked by bathing rituals for elephants, horses, cows, birds and other cattle. The full spectrum of village life and markets are on display at this annual ritual of cattle sale and auction.
