The Indian government has unveiled a $35 tablet computer for schoolchildren.

The device, which has been compared to a cross between an iPad and a tablet, is powered by solar energy and was designed by team from IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The government proposes to subsidize the tablet by 50 percent and expects to eventually distribute the device, which supports streaming video, PDF, a media player and office applications, to an estimated 110 million children under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Officials expect its price to eventually fall to $10 to $20.
