Citing human rights and environmental violations, India’s environment ministry has barred Vedanta Resources, led by Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, from mining bauxite for its alumina refinery in eastern India.

“There has been a very serious violation of laws. Therefore the project cannot go ahead,” Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told the media.

The ministry has also halted work on South Korean steel giant Posco’s planned $12 billion steel plant in Orissa and is also cracking down on Jindal Power, for constructing a power plant in Chhattisgarh that is double the authorized size.
