An Indian investment banker has been convicted of attempting to blackmail a New York state official by threatening to reveal an extramarital affair to secure a $35 million pension contract.

Giridhar Sekhar, 41, managing partner at venture capital and private equity firm FA Technology Ventures, of Brookline, Mass., sent emails in 2009 to the general counsel at the New York State Comptroller threatening to reveal an alleged extramarital affair unless the counsel agreed to invest New York State Common Retirement Fund assets in funds managed by FA Technology. The agency denies that the offical had an affair.
