Powerful Nations

| India rates itself as the 5th most powerful nation on earth, according to its National Security Index, developed by the country’s leading security and economic experts. The U.S. tops the index, followed by China, Japan and Russia. India ranks fourth in defense, seventh in economic security, 33rd in energy and 34th in technology security, according to the rankings.
Foreign secretary SM Krishna said India expects to displace Russia or Japan for fourth place by the end of this decade. The index gives the most weight to defense (30 per cent). Economic strength, technology and population are weighted 20 per cent each and energy 10 per cent.
