Facing an unprecedented faculty shortage, the Indian Institutes of Technology are deliberating proposals to recruit foreign faculty members.

An estimated one-third of teaching positions at IIT are vacant, so the IIT Council is considering allowing the institutions to appoint up to 10 percent foreign permanent faculty. IITs were granted permission to recruit foreign faculty members on 5-year contracts in 2007. Presently, there are an estimated 1,000 faculty vacancies at the 15 IITs, including 299 at IIT-Kharagpur, 222 at IIT-Bombay, 194 at IIT-Roorkee, 138 at IIT-Madras, 78 at IIT-Delhi, 69 at IIT-Kanpur, 65 65 at IIT-Guwahati and 48 at IIT-Ropad.
