mountain out of mole hills
As long as Wal-Mart has legal grounds to be in India, albeit as a partner with existing companies, it is not a problem to make it a roaring success. I believe I can do it within 5 years from store launch. It is a case of western media savvy tailored to Indian sensibilities. This is not idle braggadacio.

The Mall Culture
Indians predominantly have the culture of buying by word of mouth and bargaining. The Mall culture leaves no place to bargain. Only attraction would be heavy discounted sale. A drastic cultural change will alone evolve in the indulgence of Mall shopping. But this cultural change seems a long way as the dilution of this culture is dominated by various other factors like rising prices, economy and also the thinking pattern which is still based on dependency of various factors.
