Toxic US ship

The Indian government has banned a US-flagged ship with toxic and radioactive materials on board from being dismantled at the Alang shipyard in Gujarat.

The aged American cruise liner Platinum II was barred from berthing in the shipyard after officials found 238 tonnes of asbestos and radioactive substances in its hull.

According to media reports, the previous private owners of the Platinum II (then known as SS Oceanic) in Maryland were fined $518,500 dollars in January 2009 by the Environmental Protection Agency for illegally exporting the vessel with the PCBs on board.

SS Independence
It's not the SS Ocenic which was operated by Peace Boat. Its the former SS Independence, which was built in 1951.

Toxic US ship?
The SS Oceanic was, until very recently, a cruise ship owned and operated by Peace Boat, headquartered in Japan. The boat was built in 1965 by Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico, Italy for Home Lines, an Italian cruise line that merged with Holland America Line in 1988. The SS Oceanic re-entered service with Peace Boat in April 2009 departing Yokohama on an around-the-world cruise that ended in August 2009.

The Peace Boat is a global organization established for the purpose of building connections internationally among groups that work for peace, human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development… and evidently exporting toxic ships. But who is really behind this toxic mess - why not do your job and report that.
