Don Makes A Killing

By:

There's money in them remakes! Don, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, harks back to the cult favorite of the same name starring Amitabh Bachchan, and proves that old wine in new bottles can sometimes make you a ton of money.

Don grossed a strong $1.7 million in its first 10 days in North America. "That's better than the $1.4 million of Fanaa in the same number of days, but below the $2.4 million of KANK in its first 10 days," says Gitesh Pandya of Boxofficeguru.com. "The biggest draw was probably Shah Rukh Khan who continues to be the undisputed box office champ of Bollywood. Also there were a record number of screens and a big marketing push."

According to Lokesh Dhar of UTV, U.S. distributors of the movie, Don has crossed $2.1 million at the U.S. box office, and could end up being the second biggest hit of the year after KANK. In U.K. it crossed 1.3 million pounds. Indeed, Don had the sure-fire combination of not one but two Shah Rukh Khans, two very svelte beauties Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor, loads of James Bond gadgetry and a fast moving action packed plot. It also had a secret weapon that even Agent 007 doesn't possess - the wildly popular hit song "Khaike Paan Banaraswalla" from the original movie. Now which diehard Bollywood fan can resist that ammunition?
