Vikas Jhingran, a 34-year-old doctoral student at MIT is Toastmaster International's reigning world Champion of Public Speaking.
Jhingran's winning speech, titled "The Swami's Question" center's around a question oposde to hium by a village wise man, "Who are you?"
Jhingran, who came to the United States from Calcutta in 1995, turned to a Dale Carnegie public speaking class in 2003 to hone his public speaking skills out of concern that it was holding him back professionally.
He began participating in Toastmaster's meetings, which has 10,500 clubs in 90 countries.
"There were some very polished speakers in the competition," says Jhingran. "Much better than I was. But a speech runs much deeper than words and pronunciation." | |
