Film director Samy has been banned from the film industry for a year for slapping an actress, purportedly to bring out her artistic prowess.
The Federation of Film Workers, Tamil Film Producers Council and South Indian Artistes Association imposed the sanction following a complaint from the actress Padmapriya Janakiraman, who charged that she was slapped during a take of a scene on the film Mirugam (animal).
Samy claimed he was frustrated with the actress after 10 takes of the scene. He told a TV network: "In the 11th take her mind was not there. In between she used a bad word. I got angry and hence I used to beat her." He also told another reporter, "I slapped her because she did not emote. It's nothing new in the industry."
That it isn't.
Media reports have accused Pooja Bhatt of slapping actor Muzammil Ibrahim during the filmingof Dhoka; Vidhu Vinod Chopra of biting the actress Neha on the set of Kareeb, and the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali of forcing the actor Ranbir Kapoor to hold his finger on his lips outside the set of Black.
