A 25-year-old convenience store clerk in Grand Prairie, near Dallas, is charged with stealing a customer’s $1 million winning lottery ticket.
Police say Pankaj Joshi, a student at the University of Texas at Arlington, stole the winning Mega Millions ticket from Willis Willis who asked him to check if he had won while visiting the store. Joshi pocketed the ticket after secretly confirming the win, claimed the $750,000 after-tax prize and disappeared.
The theft came to light after Joshi’s manager at Lucky’s Food called the lottery commission in July to voice his suspicions. Police, who have recovered $365,000 from Joshi’s bank accounts, suspect he has fled to his native Nepal.
