South Asians constitute well over half the population of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The 1.75 million strong Indian community is by far the largest expatriate group in the kingdom of six million people, followed by Pakistanis with 1.25 millions and Bangladeshis with 500,000. The Indian population exceeded the population of emirate nationals in 2009, who constituted just 18 percent of the total population.
