Worst President In History? |
|
Bush's most dangerous legacy is the erosion of America's vaunted traditions of civil rights and liberties. |
|
By:
|
A reputed historian, representing a profession that is usually very circumspect about making sweeping judgments, recently speculated that President George W Bush could go down as the worst president in U.S. history.
Sean Wilentz, a professor of history at Princeton University, wrote that great presidents, "Presented with arduous, at times seemingly impossible circumstances, they rallied the nation, governed brilliantly and left the republic more secure than when they entered office." By contrast, "Calamitous presidents, faced with enormous difficulties -- James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, Herbert Hoover and now Bush -- have divided the nation, governed erratically and left the nation worse off."
Current public opinion, which is notoriously fickle, seems to reflect Wilentz's view. Bush's favorability ratings have been hovering around 30 percent. According to Gallup Poll, which has measured presidential job approval ratings since the 1940s, only four presidents, Richard Nixon, Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter and the first George Bush, have ranked lower and none recovered.
During his 1980 presidential bid, Ronald Reagan posed a dramatic question that resonated with the electorate and crucified then Pres. Carter. "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" A recent poll found that a resounding two-thirds of the American public believes the country is worse off than when Bush assumed office. Some 70 percent think it is on the wrong track; more than half consider Bush dishonest and untrustworthy.
Gross ineptitude, reckless politicking even with national security, nepotism, cronyism and sleazy corruption are at the root of Bush's failed presidency. The administration politicized national security after 9/11 by stoking fear for the sole objective of mobilizing public opinion. Shallow and incompetent political cronies, hucksters, personal friends and business associates were rewarded with plush appointments and contracts by the Bush administration.
Disastrous as Bush's incompetence and nepotism have been and the terrible price the country has paid as a result in precious resources and lives in the politicized war on terror and the misadventure in Iraq, Bush's most dangerous legacy is the erosion of America's vaunted traditions of civil rights and liberties, which served as a beacon around the world.
The first decade of the 21st century will go down in ignominy with the Red Scare of the McCarthy era, the Alien & Sedition Acts of 1798 and the persecution of dissenters in World War I and World War II. The Bush administration has used terrorism in this decade, much as McCarthy used communism.
In the name of the war against terrorism, the Bush administration has engaged in unconstitutional and criminal abuses, including kidnapping people, torturing suspects or rendering them to other countries for torture, holding prisoners without trial and sometimes without even access to attorneys and family in Guantanamo Bay and other secret gulags, and warrantless tapping of emails and telephones of U.S. citizens.
These egregious abuses have been made possible because the Republican majority in the Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives failed in its constitutional oversight responsibilities. With two-and-a-half years still remaining of the Bush term, the prospect that we are living under an incompetent and unchecked president in such perilous times ought to be sobering.
Fortunately, the American public will get an opportunity later this year for some damage control during the midterm Congressional elections. We hope that they will restore some semblance of checks and balances on a reckless, inept and constitutionally unrestrained chief executive by electing Democratic majorities in both houses so that proper investigations can be undertaken and constitutional speed breakers installed until the long Bush nightmare comes to a welcome end in 2008.

Worst President
Yes, G.W. Bush is the worst president in history. He is untrustworthy and he's a bold faced liar who stole two elections.
Our congress is also the worst congress that ever sat. I can't understand why no one ever chalanged the election results of 1999 when it was obvious that something smelled in Florida, the state of Gov. Jeb Bush.

GW Bush is the worst president in my lifetime. He has no presidential qualities and is only our president because he and his cronies had the ability steal the election with their endless wealth. When we look back at his legacy it will be one of lies and ineptitude and those who elected him should be able to admit it and hope for a better America with someone who can actually lead our country.

Worse or Best?
Achal Mehra,
I have few questions for you.
1. did any of your children die in Iraq or do you know any Indian kid who did?
2. can I come to your country where you are from and criticize your president or PM like the way you did here?
3. did you defend Bush when all the outsourcing went to your country and made your country richer when all Americans were unhappy about it and were bashing Bush?
4. if someone come and rape your wife and bash your children in front of you at your home, would you stand back and watch? Like the Somalia and Cole incident with Clinton?
What kinda man are ya?
It's interesting to see that the worst criticizers of America and GW are immigrants and outsiders.
Why don't you become a bit thankful and think about something good and write about it as well. oops i know, you may not find too many to read it...!

History
I am going to go out on a limb and say that most of you do not have the education to back up statements like George W. Bush is the worst president in history. Be honest here. You don't like Bush because he is a Republican. The media and all of the Hollywood morons went nuts on Regan and Bush 41 too. People like Bill Clinton can commit felonies, treason, and completely strip a generation of their innocence, yet he is held in such a high regard. I am not arrogant enough to say Clinton was the worst in history, but I can certainly blame his pathetic, weak foreign policy for 9-11. Thankfully Bush doesn't care what all of the lefty whiners say and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the whack-job terrorists in check.

It is hard to find words to describe Bush'e tenure in office. Shallowness and total ineptitude is a given. This in itself is not the real issue, going to war illegally, trampling on the constitution, nepotism, total disregard for the Geneva Convention (God help our troops who are captured in future conflicts) and destroying our standing among nations will have serious repercussions long after he is gone.

How does an idiot become a genius???
Just tell themselves; why would they lie?
People with memory of 3 Presidents and nearly no effort, interest or value for the other 200 YEARS aren't even prepared to ASK who the worst President was.
Any OPINION treated as definitively correct beyond question can only be sign of serious mental illness.
I also lack the knowledge or significance. But under Carter, not only were we hated, we were not feared, we were disrespected, we were disregarded and impotent. He ran on the "misery index", high interest rates, inflation and unemployment. All were worse when he left. He prevented an unknown increase in gas prices, by making us wait in line for hours, some on even days, I think I was odd days, so that we could buy no more than $10 gas. He told us the oil supply would run out in 10 years. He prohibited our entire Olympic team from participating to "make his point"; though history didn't find his "opinion" worth mention. The hopes, dreams, work, and RIGHTS of hundreds of Olympic athletes served nothing but his ego. And if he had won re-election, our hostages would have spent another 4 years in Iraq.
Don't remember a SINGLE accomplishment.
We now have infinite opportunity to discuss, collaborate with nearly everyone on the planet. I just wish people were still able to discuss and EXCHANGE ideas. When being "correct" was universally recognized as more important than "us" or anything we wanted.
It's amusing, though discouraging, to
People with memory of 3 Presidents, significantly condensed by interpretation and desired meaning,

I am not at all sure that George Bush was such a bad president. He represented the people of USA very effectively. The backlash of the Iraq expedition is as expected. If it works, then he is a great man; else he's a flop. Answer this one for me : why all the hue & cry for a few thousand US soldiers when the Iraqi casualties (civil & military) are in the lacs? Where are your answers?
Like so many liberal points of view I still look for answers in what is such a "terrible situation". Those that cry out usually don't have a legitimate answer. It is easy to cast the stone. But putting oneself in the situation of an enemy without borders, fighting it, dealing with those that complain, but who have really not been directly affected by this war, and to say words of hate? It must be nice to complain. Grow up. Are life events ever easy. America is used to instant gratification. Ask any of our grandfathers about WWII. They probably won't talk about it, but they fought the good fight, went home, lived their lives, paid their taxes, lived happy in a free country, and probably shake their heads at stories like these. Words are cheap, action is divine.

Think!
I only wish people in this country, especially those with the mob mentality that have fallen in line behind the despot that is now running our country, would think before they speak and think before they vote! First of all, has everyone forgotten that Bush had information before 9/11 that he chose to ignore, how is that Clinton's fault? No matter what short-comings Clinton had, and I won't argue there were many, it seems those who support Bush are as reluctant to lay blame where it belongs as he himself is to except blame. And for those who say that the war in Iraq was in response to 9/11 and that it has somehow made our country safer, what happened to the terrorist that was behind the attacks? Where are the weapons of mass destruction? Are there fewer terrorists out there now that want to bring war to our soil, who hate the US and everything we stand for? How many innocent Iraqi women and children have died, do you think their loved ones see us as anything but terrorists? It must be nice to live in such a bubble of ignorance and preach from such a high pulpit.

You make Neil Young sound like a genius on his CD, "Living With War." The songs touch on very similar themes. I think his songs are written with the heartbeat of the American people. That is ironic since Dubya is constantly using that term blasphemously as though everything his White House does is for and due to the opinions of Americans. We aren't buying it anymore, Demos or Republicans. We are quickly heading toward a day when the number of US soldiers will catch and surpass the losses of our people in the horrible 9/11 attacks. These attacks have been the bail out excuse for every decision Dubya has made that has failed and the so called reason to stay the course in a war without reason. Neil Young says it best when he sings, "Back in the days of shock and awe, We came to liberate them all, History was the cruel judge of overconfidence, Back in the Days of Shock

The second most dangerous legacy of the Bush debacle is the squandered opportunity of the empathy and good will for America by most of the free world and our allies after the 911 attack. What a waste!

Short memories
There was never a worse president than Bill Clinton. Clinton Lied, cheated and commited multiple felonies while in office.
George W Bush is a man whose job has been tough and sometimes unpopular but only a REAL man with integrity would make the kind of decisions he has made. Not all of his decisions are going to be popular but if they are FOR the United States "well being" than we can live with them and be quiet. The world will be a safer place in 2008.
I am PROUD to have supported George W. Bush and I resent all the short memories that forgot Clinton and his national screwups that encouraged and led the terrorists to their attacks on 9/11.
George W Bush is the best president since Ronald Reagan. You can't please everybody all the time so he is dedicated to protect our country and its freedoms for all U.S. Citizens.

I would agree with the article, though Bush still has two years but the chances of recovering much of his presidential reputation are slim. As a professional historian who has participated in several presidential polls rating all American presidents, at this point, Bush would be in the bottom ten,. wilent's comments in the article are worth underscoring. The great presidents rise above and lead through tough times; the worst ones make a bad situation worse. Bush has the latter tendency.

I am 71 years old, so I should have some basis for my comments. The professor and many others are the result of my generation's desire to educate our children and their children. It backfired. All we did was to create the worst era of college professors who are poorly informed and do not deserve their credentials and a news media that wants to influence, right or wrong, rather than report the news as it happens. Most of either group cannot come close to the great writers and educators of decades ago. This article would be written the same for other persons with just the name changed. Following a President like the Clintons, who single handedly raised the issue of oral sex not actually being sex and adultery being an acceptable practice, or Carter, (what did he do?) at least our current man is morally responsible. I think he could do something about gas prices if he wanted to, and as far as the middle east goes, the question is not if we want to be over there, it is when do we want it over here?....Again! Have you forgotten 9-11? The liberal left would have smacked their hands (again) and told them (again) not to do that anymore! Boy that scares them....huh? Bush as Worst President
Words cannot begin to express what I think of W.; however, the real question is: Can we - as a nation that cannot hold valid, free elections - ever recover from this idiot and his cadre of evil-doers? At least when previous presidents and their ideologies were exposed, the country could change course with their collective vote. My fear is that can no longer happen. With voting machines, the Rove-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Wolfowicz Project for a New American Century may have just that - a century of control in the USA until the electorate rises up in a revolution. Let's hope it doesn't take that long.

In a time of war or peace the military needs only one commander. Getting more than one order from different government organizations only aids the enemy by adding confusion to the theater of war. Perhaps the writer is correct, suspected terrorists should have certain rights. One of which would be the right to conduct terrorist activities in your neighborhood. Then the crime(s) could be punishable under applicable federal and state statues.

Worst President in History?
A very sadly political and partisan statement, attributed to a history professor who exibits a serious lack of familiarity with the key historical issues. In most of the issues addressed the President and the Congress have been over-ruled by the courts who have no constitutional right to do so. The first sentence of the
Constitution, with seperation of powers, states "All legislative powers, herein granted, shall be vested in as Congress of the United states, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives. " Partisan
politicians have used the
courts to defeat everything
attempted by the Congress and the President which
the founders, Madison,
Jefferson, Adams and
Lincoln all made clear is
dangerous, was never intended and when they do so the people cease to govern themselves and we fall under the despotism of a kind of tribunal. This

He is not the worst president. Americans believe everything they see or hear as gospel. In America only the winner goes to dinner. Why not put a fruit in office? That would please the liberals. Welcome to the land of the free and the home of the not so brave. But always remember! Your opinion is yours and that's what matters here. After all, a history professor at Princeton is the quintessential warrior. HA HA HA.

President Bush
This is to me the worst show of respect shown for our president in history. We should be backing him instead of stabbing him in the back. The spineless presidents before did nothing to stop the terroist movement. Have We as a country forgotten what happened in Oklahoma or our embasy's ? I thank God almighty for George Bush and his decisions he has made. You should be thanking him for being ready to fight for our country as did our veterans. FREEDOM is not FREE. If "Slick Willy " and prior presidents had paid more attention to his promise to get the ones responsible for the other terroist attacks instead of Monica, we might not have seen (911). We should be overwelmed that GWB is a God fearing man and pray that God would continue to lead him as he leads our country. Hell yes I did vote for him and I thank God for him. God bless you GWB.

GW's legacy
Bush's legacy an "erosion of America's vaunted civil rights and liberties"??
Say what!
So terrorists and also those who don't want to contribute to the human race because they cannot bring themselves to love the opposite sex are supposed to have the same rights as those who do not commit terror or selfishly reject responsible procreation??
I don't think so.

Bush=worst president
George W. Bush is proof positive, that for the most part, people do not grow into titles. He has failed at every position he has had only to have to be bailed out by his daddy. Why did anyone this the Presidency would be any different?

President Bush
Almost beyond belief that a even an academic could write such tedious and utterly biased tripe. Democratic innuendo and indefensible venom it seems are all we can expect from America's so-called intellectuals.

Bush
Far more than injured the nation, Bush has divided the World. He has encouraged Hate around the globe.
He could have led us all to respect each other. He could have shown the world togetherness.
Instead Bush has squandered the idea of America.

Worst President in History ?
This is nothing more than one additional example of the ineptitude of the Journalists of this country. The desire of the Democratic Party and the minions of it's followers to turn the soverienty of the United States over to the United Nations. What Democrats don't understand is the fact that America is turning away from the mainstream press. Paper sales are deminishing, the major network news organizations are finding it puzzling that their ratings continue to plummet. Actually more than half of the nation considers journalists to be dishonest and untrustworthy. Your problem has been the fact that you could never get past selling your souls to keep a criminal in office during the last presidency. That you could never get past the fact that Gore lost Florida. Your bitterness has made your own fiction become your reality. The failed foreign policies of the previous administration resulted

Worst President in Indian History
This story is foolish at best and evil at worst. I like how the "dotheads" feel that they can bash Bush when they run one of the poorest, most hosed up countries in the world where poverty is the rule and women are raised from childhood to be prostitutes. Get real and get out of our business. Go back to polluting the Ganges -- you are good at that.

Bush-Worst President?
The ratings are not about the President. They represent a nation that is more concerned about being political correct. Sad to say, but americans have a short memory, and would rather be crisis mangers instead of being proactive. the article is a speculation on and totally inaccurate when it mentions cival liberites. Americans that say that cheating on your wife and having oral sex at the office is OK- is not a protection of my civil liberties. I like the fact that I can eat at a food court in a mall and not worry if some terrorist is going to blow it up.
Some americans want Bush to act like a King (KATRINA) and bypass state and local laws. Then afterwards, they want him to go back to the white house and shut up. It doesn't work that way.
