Social activists says villagers who prefer boys gave derogatory names to the girls at birth to express their disappointment.
222 girls named Nakoshi or Nakusa — meaning unwanted — in Maharashtra’s Satara district have been renamed a festive public ceremony.
Social activists says villagers who prefer boys gave derogatory names to the girls at birth to express their disappointment. Sudha Kankaria, President of Save The Baby Girl Mission, which helped identify the girls, told the Times of India: “As the girl grows, she feels humiliated, loses self-esteem and develops a complex. After marriage, she will be afraid to bear a female child.”
The girls were allowed to pick their new names. Not surprisingly, there are quite a few Aishwarya Rais, Kareena Kapoors and Sakshi Tanwars now in the village. Now who wouldn’t want that?
