India has overtaken Thailand to become the world’s top exporter of rice.
India exported 2.7 million metric tons of rice from October through January. Thailand and Vietnam, which have long been the world’s largest exporters, exported 2 million and 1.5 million tons, respectively, during the four-month period. China, the world’s largest rice producer, is not a major exporter.
India recently lifted a three-year ban on export of non-Basmati rice. Indian rice is almost $100 per ton cheaper than Thai rice on the global market.
