Marriage Goes To The Dogs

Sorry folks. These nine marriages have been called off. It's not that the couples developed cold feet. But in the wake of criticism from animal rights groups and religious elders, Pink City Canine Club in Jaipur has cancelled plans to pair and marry nine dogs with bitches in an elaborate Hindu ceremony, complete with the sacred fire and exchange of garlands.

Naresh Kadyan, chairman of People for Animals, protested: "People hold the front legs of the dogs against their will and force them to dance, which is cruel. The lights, noise, sound used in these kinds of events also hurt them."

The organizers apologized and are focusing on their next event - a beauty pageant for "unmarried dogs."
