Nearly one million permanent residents will be required to replace their green cards under a proposal from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
In a statement, the USCIS said, "The change will allow the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to issue more secure permanent resident cards, update cardholder information, conduct background checks and electronically store applicants' fingerprint and photographic information." Earlier the agency had encouraged, but not mandated that green cards issued prior to 1989 be replaced. Cards issued after 1989 expire in 10 years, whereas the earlier cards did not have an expiration date. |

I did look in uscis .gov I don\'t see uscis.gov stating anything about replacing NON EXPIRING GREEN CARDS as a must . Jan -07 -2009 I took my non expiring green card and went to immigration service to check see if my non expiring still valid .They checked their computer and they said my green card still valid so far (jan 07 -2009 ) . Anything written on the web just personal imagination idea if not having proof link from USCIS . WE NEED PROOF LINK LAST DECISION FROM USCIS .GOV . We need last decision not proposal
NOTE: This is a USCIS proposal, which has NOT been implemented yet. It has come in for considerable criticism. Such proposals go through public annoucements and reviews before (and if) they are implemented.
