| A Foster City, Calif., Indian American has been charged with assaulting his 81-year-old father in the head with a hammer to secure his admission to a nursing home. Jayantibhai Patel, 57, mistakenly believed that hospitalization was a precondition for admission to a nursing home.
Patel faces up to 10 years in jail for attempted murder, assault and elder abuse. He was released after his father, who received seven stitches, posted a $500,000 property bond. Police say Patel planned the assault and even attempted to recruit the live-in housekeeper in his scheme. His attorney Thomas J Gray criticized the media for sensationalizing the story, insisting that his client was motivated by his father's best interests: "He was doing this because he loves his father and he wanted to take care of him." |
