Nearly 30,000 women have been abandoned by their NRI husbands, according to Indian government estimates.

Activists believe the figures are even higher as many cases are unreported.

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) has established a division to offer counseling and legal and financial assistance for Indian wives abandoned abroad. It has also published a booklet for women planning to marry NRIs offering advice on everything from verifying the background of prospective spouses and their families to seeking assistance and support when abused.

There are an estimated 20 million overseas Indians and some 450,000 others emigrate very year.
