U.S. officials are proposing stationing Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspectors in India to check the safety of U.S. bound food products.

The FDA is setting up a similar program in China. With exports of food products from India spiking, Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt said, "We have also initiated conversations with the Indian Government on the need to have similar kinds of officers in India."

The idea, he said, is to implement product safety in originating countries. "Our new strategy is that we have to roll the borders back and make certain that safety is built into every product, along every step of the supply chain."
