Indian store owners in Houston turned to the Black Panthers for help to guard their stores against potential looters in the wake of Hurricane Ike.

The Black Panther Party claims it deployed members to protect Indian gasoline station convenience stores from looters.
Nabi Chowdhury, manager of a Mobil station, told the Houston Chronicle, "We hired these Black Panther people to take care of our two stores .... We have confidence in them because for a long time we have known them, and their attitude and everything, we like.''
