In advance of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Indian government is launching a drive to spruce up the country's gastronomic image.

The Indian Food Safety and Standards Agency plans to vet health standards at 1,000 restaurants all over Delhi and publish a Directory of Safe Eating Establishments booklet listing the healthiest places for samosas, chaat, chicken tikka masala and other Indian delights. Restaurants that pass the cut will be entitled to display a safety logo.

The scheme is proposed to be extended to other major tourist destinations in future years.

Recent studies have found that 90 percent of street foods are unhygienic.
