Raining Shoes

Throwing a shoe, which last year elevated an unknown Iraqi journalist to international journalist stardom, has become the protest of choice in this year’s parliamentary elections in India.

The torrent of shoes was launched by a Sikh journalist Jarnail Singh, who flung his sneaker at Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram at a press conference. A Sikh political party offered Singh a $4,000 award and even offered to nominate him for elections. In the weeks since, people have taken aim at the actor politician Jeetendra, Congress Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal and opposition party leader Lal Krishna Advani.

The common thread in all the incidents — they all had lousy aim and all of them missed their mark.
