A solar powered rickshaw, called Soleckshaw, aims to reduce the physical burdens of India’s 8 million rickshaw drivers.

Developed by India’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Soleckshaw operates on a 26 volt battery that can run for 25 miles at speeds of up to 10 miles per hour.

The soleckshaw is presently being tested in New Delhi, where a charging station has been set up at the Delhi Metro Rail Station. Officials aim to introduce an improved version of the vehicle in time for the Commonwealth Games.

But the Soleckshaw is priced at $440, nearly three times the cost of the hand drawn rickshaw, an out of reach economic burden for many rickshaw peddlers whose physical burdens it seeks to ease.
