A campaign by the sanitation organization Sulabh International has found an unlikely ally in rural Haryana among eligible women who are putting societal pressure on prospective bridegrooms to support the program under a campaign “No toilet. No bride.”According to officials, the campaign has been so successful that the proportion of homes with toilets had risen tenfold in just four years to 60 percent. The government offers a 90 percent subsidy to cover the cost of adding a toilet to a home. According to press accounts, at least one woman divorced her husband after she discovered he had lied about having a toilet.
