Two Indian diamond merchants have been charged with a $7 million insurance fraud for staging a diamond heist a year earlier, which media reports at the time compared to the movie Snatch. Atul Shah, 48, and Mahaveer Kankariya, 43, owners of Dialite Imports, a wholesale diamond business in New York’s diamond district, are accused of hiring two men to pose as Hisadic Jews in December 2008 to rob their business at gun point and then claiming $7 million in compensation from their insurer Lloyds, which alerted police. Shah and Kankariya told police that the robbers stole $9 million in jewelry and damaged the store’s surveillance system. Police were able to retrieve some of the surveillance tapes, which allegedly show the owners emptying the safes of jewelry two hours before the robbery. |
