More Indians have cell phones than toilets, according to the United Nations.

Just a third of Indians —366 million — have access to proper sanitation, while nearly half — or 545 million — have cell phones.

“Obviously, the marketing for cellphone use has managed to get it right and the marketing for sanitation hasn’t necessarily hit the right places and the right people,” Corinne Shuster-Wallace author of the UN report noted wryly. “It is astounding that in this day and age, with technology and globalization, that so many people don’t have adequate access to sanitation.”
