South African police have charged the husband of a woman murdered on her honeymoon in South Africa for plotting his wife’s death.

Police say Shrien Dewani hired three men for $2,000 to kill his wife, Anni Dewani, 28, from Sweden, who was shot after being kidnapped while in a taxi with her husband near Cape Town in November.

Dewani’s attorneys claim that the “totally ludicrous” allegations were manufactured by South African authorities to protect the country’s lucrative tourism industry. His legal team is seeking to block South Africa’s extradition attempt claiming he will not get a fair trial after the country’s chief of police Bheki Cele branded Dewani a monkey, saying, “One monkey came from London to kill his wife here. He thought we South Africans were stupid. Don’t kill people here.”

The couple’s taxi driver, Zolo Tongo, who confessed to involvement in the murder and has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, told the court that he was hired by Dewani to stage a carjacking in which his wife would be killed and he would not be harmed.
