India’s food minister wants to curb “extravagant and luxurious functions,” which, he says, are contributing to food inflation.

 
Food and consumer affairs minister, KV Thomas, says that almost 15% of all grains and vegetables in
India are squandered at these outsized events and is proposing legislation to “curb profligacy” to preserve stocks for the poor.

“There is huge wastage of food at weddings and other social functions. It is a criminal wastage. We are finding out mechanism to bring down such wastage of food,” Thomas said
