Meat consumption is on the rise in India, with per capita consumption topping 5 to 5.5 kgs. a year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO.

Chicken consumption has doubled to 2.26 kgs/year from a decade earlier.

Meat consumption in India remains well below the Asian or world averages, which were 30 kgs and 47 kgs respectively.

India ranked dead last in 2007 in per capita meat consumption, behind Bangladesh, which had the next lowest consumption. Luxembourg 136.7 kgs, United States 122.8 kgs, Australia 122.7 kgs, New Zealand 116.8 kgs, ranked at the top in consumption.
